Scientific, Biblical, and Theological Perspectives on Our Origins

LSTC Course T-456
Monday Evenings, 7-10 pm
January 6 to March 17, 2003

Lutheran School of Theology
 1100 East 55th Street
Chicago, IL  60615

We invite you to a unique lecture series on the Epic of Creation that will present the scientific story of the origins and evolution of the universe, life, and humans; exegeses of the biblical story of creation; and theological reflections on the stories.

The scientific story, an account of past events back to the beginning of time as inferred from records in starlight, rocks, and fossils, will be told by scientists who are among the many authors of the story.  The exegeses of the biblical story of the world's beginnings and continuing creation as found in the Old and New Testaments, together with introductory lectures on the myths of civilizations that shaped biblical concepts of creation, will be presented by biblical scholars.  Theologians will reflect on issues and questions raised by the stories and their implications for Christian understandings of the world, humanity, and God.  Prologue and epilogue lectures will explore the meaning of the stories:  what they tell us about how we should live and why, how the world works, who we human beings are, and what we are here for.

The lectures are free and open to the  public. Individual lectures are self-contained and can be followed without attending all.  The series may be taken for course credit.  For details, call (773) 256 0670.
